Types of Public Transport

1) Seoul Metro

  • Seoul metro runs from 5:30 to midnight.

  • It has 23 lines that cover Seoul and nearby areas, including Incheon and Gyeonggi-do.

  • Fares vary based on distance, starting at ₩1,250 ($1).

2) Seoul Bus

  • Buses run from 4:30 to 23:00, with some late-night buses available after midnight.

  • Buses are color-coded: Blue (long-distance), Green (local), Yellow (central routes), Red (express).

3) Taxi

  • Taxis are affordable and available all over the city. They can be flagged on the street or booked via apps.

  • Base fare for normal taxi : ₩4,800 ($3.60) for the first 1.6 km, with additional costs for time and distance.

  • Extra charges apply after 10pm and for deluxe taxis.

  • Recommended App: Kakao T (book a ride in English)

4) Bikes

  • Seoul has a public bike rental system, Ddareungi, which is great for short trips, especially around parks and along the riverside.

How to Use and Cost

1) T-Money Card

  • The easiest way to pay for public transport and can be used on subways, buses, and taxis. Buy and top-up at convenience stores(GS25 or 7-Eleven) and subway stations.

2) Fares

  • Subway and buses start at ₩1,250 ($1), with prices increasing based on distance.

  • Taxis start at ₩4,800 ($3.60)

3) How to Use

  • Tap your T-Money card when ‘entering’ and ‘exiting’ the subway or bus. The fare is calculated based on the distance traveled.

  • Free transfers are available between buses and subways within 30 minutes of tapping out (or 1 hour between 9pm- 7am).

1) Download Transit Apps

  • Use ‘KakaoMap’ or ‘Naver Map’ for real-time transit information inEnglish, including subway routes and bus schedules (espescially for airport buses).

2) Avoid Rush Hours

  • The subway and buses get crowded during rush hours (7am - 9am and 5pm - 7pm). Traveling outside these times is more comfortable.

3) No Food or Drinks Allowed

  • Food and drinks are not allowed on public transport, especially buses. Be sure to finish or dispose of them before boarding, as you won’t be able to get on the bus with a drink in hand.

4) Subway Etiquette

  • Priority seats are reserved for the elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. Avoid using them unless necessary.

  • Stay to the right on escalators to let people pass on the left.

5) English Signage

  • Most subway stations and bus stops have English signs, making it easy to navigate.

6) Night Buses

  • If you’re out late, use N-buses, which run after the subway closes and cover major routes.

7) Add Extra Time for Bus Travel

  • Buses can be delayed by traffic, especially during rush hours, so plan extra time for bus trips.
